Gypsy Moth Spraying

Gypsy moth infestations are not only a nuisance to residents, but uncontrolled populations can be detrimental to the health of wooded areas. Oaks usually suffer more attacks than other tree species. Deciduous trees in good condition, prior to infestation can withstand one or two consecutive years of defoliation before decline. Evergreens can suffer decline after only one year.

A map of the treatment area is attached below.

The Contractor will make two aerial applications of bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in early to mid June with a small low-flying helicopter. The applications will take place in early morning and will be approximately 7 days apart. Timing of the applications will depend on when the moths are hatching as well as weather conditions.

The Contractor will be aerial spraying Foray 48B. The active ingredient is Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki. Bt kurstaki is a naturally occurring bacteria that disrupts the digestive system of leaf and needle-feeding caterpillars. It breaks down quickly in nature and has an extremely low toxicity to humans and domestic animals. However, as a precaution, you may want to limit outdoor activities early in the morning on these days.

A copy of the Material Safety Data Sheet for Foray 48B is available at the City Hall. The City of Wood Dale will supply traps for those resident located within the areas identified for spraying; these traps are most effective if used between July & August.
