Water Main Repair:

All reports of leaks and water main breaks are investigated by staff as soon as possible. Some water main breaks can leave some residents without water, and can take two to four hours to complete, once the water service is shut off. Service restoration may vary, depending on the severity of the repair.  

During this time, a Public Works repair crew is assembled and dispatched to the repair site. Affected businesses and residences will be notified, of the break/leak and that they may have low to no water pressure during the repair time. Once utilities are located, the water main is excavated and repaired. Final restoration of the work site usually takes between two to four weeks from the time the work has been completed. Site restoration is dependent upon the type of restoration required and scheduling work with the other divisions. Winter excavations are usually completed during April and May. Restorations are dependent upon the availability of materials to finish the repairs (e.g., hot asphalt).

Valve Repair:

A valve is a mechanical device that blocks the flow of water in a pipe for sections of the City’s distribution system to isolate repairs. When a valve requires a repair or a replacement, public works crews need to close valves to isolate the area needing attention. This can cause water shutoffs in certain areas, so staff can safely access the area to complete the repair.

Once the new valve is in place, public works staff will test the valve to make sure it is functioning properly. This work can take four to eight hours to complete, depending on the condition, and complexity of the replacement. Regular valve replacements are essential for protecting the longevity of the City’s water infrastructure, ensuring residents continue to receive clean, reliable water service.

Hydrant Flushing:

Public Works personnel conduct hydrant flushing to ensure the hydrants are operating properly. Additionally, this allows staff to remove sediment from the pipes to maintain water clarity and quality. Occasionally, water becomes discolored after hydrant flushing. If this happens, residents are encouraged to let their faucets run for a few minutes if they notice any discoloration. If it does not clear the first time, people should wait a few minutes and run the water again. Residents should avoid washing clothes until the water is clear.
