Where does the City authorize fiber companies to perform work?
The license agreements between the City and the fiber companies authorize the fiber companies to perform work in the public right-of-way.
What is the public right-of-way?
Typically, the public right of way is that portion of land that runs parallel with the street and extends about 5-10 feet away on both sides of the street. In those areas in which sidewalks have been installed, the right-of-way is generally the strip of land between the street and the sidewalk. There is still public right-of-way in those areas of the City where there is no sidewalk; however, the location of the right-of-way may not be as obvious.
Why are multiple companies installing fiber in Wood Dale?
The City cannot deny right-of-way access to utility companies that meet state/federal requirements, as well as meet our local permitting and restoration standards for work done in the public right-of-way. Having multiple fiber internet providers allows more choice, competitive pricing, and better service for Wood Dale residents over time.
How will I be notified about upcoming construction?
City staff will mail notices to all residential properties located within each project area. Additionally, the contractor will distribute door hangers 48 hours prior to the work.
How do I identify fiber company construction crews?
The construction crews employed by the fiber companies typically wear vests or branded workwear that designate which company they are working for. Similarly, the vehicles operated by the construction crews will also likely be branded by the appropriate fiber company.
I experienced damage during construction - who will fix it?
The construction phase of this project is temporary, and crews do their best to minimize the impact to property. All damage occurring during construction is required to be repaired by the provider. Residents may contact providers directly or request assistance from City staff by contacting Public Works.
Can I move utility flags?
Please do not move or remove flags or paint markings. They indicate the location of underground gas, water, and electric lines and help crews avoid damaging them. Construction typically begins within a week of marking. Flags will be removed once work is complete and restoration finished.
Why are these companies in our City?
The provider company is creating a fiber network throughout the City - people who want to sign up for service may do so. There is no requirement for any home to sign up for service.
