• Updating building Codes helps protect people, property and long-term community investments.

• The Code update applies to all new construction activities that require a building permit.
• There are no retroactive requirements for existing buildings or projects already under construction.
• Projects submitted after the effective date (April 1, 2026) must follow the new codes. When in doubt—ask before you submit!

The new Codes are not retroactive.

You will not need to bring your existing home or business into conformance with the newly adopted Codes until you propose new construction on your property. Any remodeling, alterations, additions, and/or new construction that requires a building permit must meet the new Code standards. 

All projects that are already under review or construction using the previously adopted building codes can proceed as planned. Projects submitted after the effective date, April 1, 2026, must follow the new Codes.

Be sure to submit your complete building permit application, including all required plans and documents before April 1, 2026. Applications submitted after the effective date will need to comply with the newly adopted 2021 ICC Building Codes.
